Pregnant woman dies in Yahukimo after medical evacuation hampered
A pregnant woman in Panggema District, Yahukimo Regency, Papua Highlands, reportedly died after allegedly being unable to receive a medical referral to a more comprehensive health facility. This incident is said to be related to the disruption of air transportation services, which had been the main route for evacuating patients in the region.
Information about the incident first circulated through social media posts. Several accounts, including the Facebook accounts Marthen Aliknoe, An Michael, and Info Jayapura, reported that the victim, named Nehe, died because she was unable to be referred to a hospital due to the lack of flights to the hospital.
According to circulating information, the air evacuation process could not be carried out because no airlines were willing to serve the route to Panggema District. This situation was reportedly influenced by the security situation in the region following the death of pilot Capt. Nicholas F. Gosselin.
Due to the disruption of air transportation, the patient allegedly did not receive further treatment at a hospital with adequate delivery facilities and obstetric services.
This incident has again highlighted the issue of access to healthcare in the mountainous region of Papua. In many remote districts, pilot aircraft are the only mode of transportation for emergency patient transfers, including pregnant women, infants, and critically ill patients.
When flight services are disrupted due to safety or operational factors, medical referrals are hampered, potentially increasing the risk to those in need of immediate care.
