BMKG Warns of Potential Hydrometeorological Disasters and Opportunities for Agriculture
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the rainy season in 2025 will arrive earlier than previously predicted, starting in several regions as early as August 2025.
“This year’s rainy season arrived earlier, starting in August and will continue through October and November,” said BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati in Jakarta on Friday (February 12, 2025).
Regions that will enter the rainy season in mid-August 2025 include North and Central Sumatra, Banten, West Java, East Java, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Gorontalo, South Sulawesi, and West Papua.
Regions where the rainy season will begin in September include most of North Sumatra, parts of Riau, northern West Sumatra, western Jambi, northern Bengkulu, southern Bangka Belitung, South Sumatra, parts of Java, South Kalimantan, and parts of southern Papua.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that most areas of Sumatra and Kalimantan will experience the peak rainy season in November to December 2025. Furthermore, Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua, and Bali are expected to experience peak rainfall in January to February 2026.
“The rainfall characteristics for the 2025-2026 rainy season are predicted to be within the normal category, indicating conditions that are neither too wet nor too dry. However, we need to be wary of high-intensity rainfall concentrated within a short period of days or hours,” he said.
Dwikorita continued, noting that recent rainfall in Bali recorded more than 380 millimeters of rain falling in less than a day. However, according to rainfall classifications, rainfall exceeding 150 millimeters is considered extreme rainfall.
