The United Kingdom (UK) government has stated its readiness to recognize the state of Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September 2025 if Israel fails to meet several important conditions to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The ultimatum was delivered directly by British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer after holding an emergency cabinet meeting. He emphasized that recognition of Palestine would be granted if Israel did not:

1. Agree to a ceasefire.
2. Commit to a long-term peace based on a two-state solution.
3. Allow the UN to resume humanitarian aid to Gaza.

“The situation in Gaza is intolerable, and the chances of a two-state solution are diminishing,” Starmer said.

According to him, Britain’s goal is to see a safe and secure Israel side by side with a viable and sovereign Palestinian state. He also warned Israel against annexing any part of the West Bank.

However, Starmer also demanded that Hamas immediately release all hostages, sign a ceasefire, disarm, and accept that it would not be involved in governing Gaza.

Israel and the US Reject

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded sharply to the British threat. He wrote on social media:

“A jihadist state on Israel’s borders today will threaten Britain tomorrow. Making concessions to terrorists always fails, and this will not happen.”

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump admitted that he never discussed the plan with Starmer during a meeting in Scotland on July 28. Trump argued that the British move could be seen as a “reward” to Hamas, which he said was undeserved.

The US and several European countries have previously emphasized that Palestinian recognition can only be granted as part of a long-term peace process.

Facts About the Recognition of Palestine Around the World

To date, approximately 139 countries have officially recognized the state of Palestine, including Indonesia, which did so on November 15, 1988.

On May 28, 2024, Ireland, Norway, and Spain also granted official recognition as a diplomatic move to pressure Israel to agree to a ceasefire in Gaza.

However, some believe that recognizing a Palestinian state without an agreement on clear borders and leadership would be merely political symbolism.
