Trash at Taylor Swift Wedding Venue Is Up for Sale
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding not only captured the attention of fans but also inspired a unique business idea. New York-based artist Justin Gignac is utilizing discarded items around the venue to create artwork that is then sold to collectors.
Through his project, titled Pocket Garbage, Gignac collects various objects found around Madison Square Garden (MSG). The trash is then packaged in transparent plastic boxes and marketed as limited-edition artwork.
While collecting the items on July 3rd, Gignac appeared unusually dressed in a tuxedo. He combed the area around the venue and found various items abandoned by attendees, from Ring Pop candy wrappers to single AirPods earbuds to pregnancy test kits.
Each box has a different content, making it a unique piece. Gignac sells the small version for US$25 (approximately Rp452,000), while the large one is sold for US$100 (approximately Rp1.8 million).
In one day, he manages to collect enough materials to make approximately 50 boxes. According to Gignac, the project is part of an artistic exploration he has been pursuing for nearly a quarter of a century.
He stated that his main goal was not simply to sell trash, but rather to encourage the public to see that objects considered worthless still have stories and meaning when placed in different contexts.
The idea elicited a mixed response from New Yorkers. Some considered the concept unique and creative, while others felt its main appeal stemmed from its connection to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s high-profile wedding.
Gignac also revealed that he had prepared a special box that he planned to give to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce if the couple would accept it as a memento of their special day.
