Liverpool Called to Unfollow After Supporting LGBT
Liverpool has once again become the focus of public attention, not just for their results on the pitch, but for their social media activities. The club, nicknamed The Reds, has drawn both controversy and controversy after declaring its support for Liverpool Pride activities related to the LGBT+ community, sparking calls from some fans to unfollow the club’s official account.
The controversy began when Liverpool’s official Instagram account announced the club’s participation in the Liverpool Pride parade. In the post, the club emphasized its commitment to the values of inclusion, diversity, and support for the LGBT+ community in Liverpool and the surrounding area.
“Tomorrow, we will join the Liverpool Pride parade alongside our colleagues, supporters, and stakeholders. We are proud to celebrate the LGBT+ community in Liverpool and beyond, championing inclusion, support, and belonging,” wrote the official Liverpool account.
Furthermore, Liverpool also replaced its Liver Bird logo on social media with a rainbow flag (Pride Flag) background. This move was seen as a show of support for the club’s long-standing diversity and inclusivity campaign.
The post immediately sparked a mixed response. Some supporters expressed support for the club’s stance, while others expressed their disapproval in social media comment sections. Several accounts even called for unfollowing Liverpool’s official account in protest.
Liverpool’s support for the LGBT+ community is nothing new. In recent seasons, the club has consistently engaged in various inclusivity campaigns, including providing Pride-themed merchandise in the club’s official store. This policy has also sparked debate among supporters.
Liverpool is not the only Premier League club to participate in this campaign. Several Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, and Manchester United, have previously expressed support for the LGBT+ community through various activities and campaigns.
The movement is part of the Premier League’s *Premier League With Pride* initiative, which aims to foster a more inclusive football environment while combating all forms of discrimination.
Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said the campaign is part of the league’s commitment to ensuring football can be enjoyed by all, regardless of background.
“Premier League With Pride demonstrates our continued support for the LGBTQ+ community and our commitment to ensuring that football is for everyone and that inclusivity is embedded in all areas of the game,” said Richard Masters.
He added that the Premier League will continue to work with all clubs to improve inclusivity and take action against discrimination, both in stadiums and digitally.
Amidst the controversy, Liverpool continues its preparations for the new Premier League season. Andoni Iraola’s team kicked off their preseason tour of the United States with a 4-2 win over Sunderland in Nashville on Saturday (July 25th), before continuing with the rest of their preseason schedule.
