Protests in Nepal Marked by Looting at Minimarkets

The wave of massive demonstrations in Nepal, spearheaded by the younger generation (Gen-Z), not only led to the ouster of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Tuesday (September 9, 2025), but also triggered mass looting.

Several convenience stores and hotels were reportedly targeted by groups exploiting the chaotic situation to commit crimes.

However, a convenience store employee said the looters did not appear to have any affiliation with the Gen-Z demonstrations, but were instead other groups using the unrest as cover.

“The people involved in the looting are not part of the youth movement; they are simply exploiting the unrest,” said one convenience store employee, as quoted by Khabarhub.

In addition to banks, looting also targeted the Bhatbhateni Bank in Bhaktapur, the Hyatt Hotel, and the Bouddha area.
