Trump Desak NATO Hentikan Pembelian Minyak Rusia
United States (US) President Donald Trump has once again made controversial statements regarding NATO member states’ stance toward Russia. In an open letter posted on the platform Truth Social, Trump urged all NATO members to immediately stop purchasing oil from Moscow.
In what he described as a letter to NATO and the world, Trump emphasized his readiness to impose severe sanctions on Russia. However, this measure would only be taken if all NATO members agreed to do the same.
“I am prepared to impose severe sanctions on Russia when all NATO countries agree to do the same, and when all NATO countries stop buying oil from Russia,” Trump wrote on Saturday (September 13, 2025).
Trump believes the Western alliance’s commitment to winning the Ukraine war remains weak, particularly because several members continue to import energy from Russia. He believes this situation actually weakens NATO’s negotiating position with Moscow.
Furthermore, Trump also proposed that NATO impose high tariffs on China, ranging from 50 to 100 percent. He accused Beijing of continuing to prop up the Russian economy amidst global isolation.
“If NATO does what I say, the war will be over soon. If not, you’re just wasting my time,” Trump wrote in the same post.
According to data from the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), Turkey is the world’s third-largest buyer of Russian oil after China and India. Meanwhile, several NATO member states, such as Hungary and Slovakia, remain dependent on Russian energy supplies.
Atlantic Council international relations analyst Daniel Fried believes Trump’s statement reflects a long-standing pattern of pressure on allies.
“Trump is again putting NATO under an ultimatum. However, completely cutting off Russian oil will be difficult because some members still rely heavily on those supplies,” he said.
Trump’s statement comes amid rising Russian military tensions in Eastern Europe. Last week, Polish forces, along with NATO, shot down a Russian drone that violated Polish airspace. This incident marked one of Moscow’s largest attacks on Ukraine since its 2022 invasion.
