The term nepo baby refers to the children of influential figures in Nepal
Nepal is in the grip of a serious political crisis after a wave of massive demonstrations turned violent. The protests, sparked by issues of nepotism, corruption, and the lavish lifestyles of officials’ children, known as nepo babies and nepo kids, have led to the collapse of the government.
The term nepo baby refers to the children of influential figures in politics, business, and public officials who enjoy privileges and positions due to their family’s reputation. In Nepal, this phenomenon is fueling public anger, especially among Generation Z.
“(Generation Z) is demanding accountability and a fair investigation into this corruption, this lavish lifestyle, all these corrupt politicians’ children,” said one demonstrator, Shree Gurung, as quoted by CNN International.
Government Collapses, Authorities Accused of Brutalization
The protests, which began last Monday, led to the resignation of Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli, who had previously served four terms. The situation escalated after 19 people were reportedly killed by repressive authorities.
Protesters set fire to the parliament building, officials’ homes, and even the Supreme Court. In fact, several ministers, such as Nepal’s Minister of Finance and Minister of Foreign Affairs, have been victims of street harassment.
From Social Media to Nepotism
Initially, public anger was sparked by the government’s policy of shutting down 26 social media applications. However, issues of nepotism and the flexing of wealth by the children of officials fueled the protests.
Nepal’s younger generation is furious because the inequality is becoming increasingly apparent: nepo kids can easily secure high positions or enter parliament, while ordinary people struggle to find work just to buy basic food.
Who Are Nepal’s Nepo Babies?
Citing a report by the Indian media outlet News 18, here are some names that have come under public scrutiny:
Shrinkhala Khatiwada (29), daughter of former Health Minister Birodh Khatiwada. Her family’s house was burned down after her luxurious vacation went viral.
Shivana Shrestha, daughter-in-law of former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. She and her husband are accused of flaunting billions in wealth.
Smita Dahal, granddaughter of former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda.” She was criticized for flaunting expensive handbags on social media.
According to reports, the officials’ children often wear clothes and accessories worth millions of dollars, a far cry from the reality of Nepal’s poverty-stricken society.
Nepal’s Economic Situation
Although Nepal’s economy grew by 4.9% in the first half of 2025, more than 83% of the workforce still relies on the informal sector. The country also ranks fourth in the world in terms of remittances from migrant workers abroad.
The social media blackout exacerbates the situation by hindering citizens’ communication with their families working abroad.
