PT Freeport Indonesia underground mine suddenly collapsed

A landslide suddenly occurred at PT Freeport Indonesia’s underground mine in the Grasberg area of ​​Tembagapura, Mimika, Central Papua. Seven workers are reportedly trapped.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia immediately assigned us to go directly to the Freeport mine site in Mimika, Central Papua, which reported a landslide on Monday (September 8) evening.

“I was informed by Mr. Tony Wenas yesterday, and my team went to the site to investigate,” Bahlil said at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

“Once the team has been on site, we will provide detailed information,” he added.

According to information gathered in Timika, the landslide occurred in the Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) underground mine on Monday (September 8) evening at around 11:21 PM WIT.

The site remains below the Grasberg open-pit mine, which has been inactive for several years. The wetmuck is suspected to have originated from the GBC panel area.

Within PTFI’s underground mine in the Tembagapura District, Mimika Regency, Central Papua, there are always shelters (rooms) available for workers in case of a dangerous situation.
