Elon Musk Criticized by Doctor Strange Director
Elon Musk’s plan to make The Odyssey entirely using artificial intelligence (AI) has drawn harsh criticism from Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson. He believes the Tesla and SpaceX founder doesn’t understand the world of cinema or art.
Derrickson made this criticism via his Twitter account after Musk claimed his AI technology, Grok Imagine, could produce a historically accurate feature-length film of The Odyssey that remains faithful to Homer’s epic before the end of 2026.
“Clearly, Elon Musk knows nothing about cinema and stopped reading in his 20s. His opinions on art are worthless,” wrote Scott Derrickson, as quoted by Variety, Thursday (July 23, 2026).
Previously, Musk shared a three-minute AI video featuring footage from the story of Odysseus and Calypso. He was even optimistic that the AI ​​version of the film could be completed before the end of the year.
“Before the year is out, Grok Imagine will produce a historically accurate feature-length film of The Odyssey that is faithful to Homer’s art,” wrote Elon Musk.
However, this claim sparked a wave of criticism on social media. Many netizens questioned how a Greek mythological tale filled with gods, monsters, and even the Cyclops could be considered “historically accurate.” Some also found inconsistencies in the AI ​​teaser, such as the character Odysseus appearing to be wearing an earpiece, even though in the original story he hears the Sirens’ song with his ears open while his men plug theirs with beeswax.
Furthermore, several social media users argued that AI should be used as a creative tool, not as a replacement for actors, directors, or artists in the filmmaking process. Criticism of Musk’s AI project was also linked to his previous criticism of Christopher Nolan’s film, The Odyssey.
