A demonstration by thousands of residents from various social groups in front of the Pati Regency Hall, Central Java, turned violent on Wednesday (August 13, 2025).

The crowd threw stones, bottles, vegetables, and other objects at police officers. Officers fired tear gas and pushed the crowd away from the starting point of the demonstration, Pati Square.

The streets around the square were also littered with stones thrown at security forces.

The riot was sparked by the protesters’ disappointment over the failure to meet with Pati Regent Sudewo, despite previous promises. The crowd, which filled the courtyard of the hall, demanded that Sudewo resign from his position.

Regent Sudewo was inside the hall with Pati Police Chief, Senior Commissioner Jaka Wahyudi, and Military District Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Timotius Berlian Yogi Ananto, who attempted to persuade him to meet with the protesters.

The protest’s field coordinator, Ahmad Husein, said the crowd reached 100,000 people, including market vendors. “I thank all the people, especially those who supported our action,” he said.

Husein emphasized that the main demand of the action was for Regent Sudewo to step down from his position.
